A boutique stay inside Mdina's walls

Nine rooms in a golden-stone palazzo, a shaded courtyard, and a table that keeps the hours of the island. Quiet, warm, and entirely yours.

A house within the walls

After the last coach leaves, Mdina falls silent. Casa Verdala is where you stay to hear it.

The house

A palazzo that has kept its own time

Built in honey-coloured Maltese stone three centuries ago, the house folds inward around a courtyard where the light moves slowly and the noise of the day does not follow you in. We restored it room by room, keeping the worn thresholds, the vaulted ceilings and the shutters that still close against the afternoon.

There is no lobby to hurry through and no queue at breakfast. Nine rooms, a handful of quiet corners, and a small team who will know your name by the second morning.

Where you will rest

Each room is different, shaped by the walls it was given. All look inward to the courtyard or out across the bastions.

Dining

A short menu, cooked close to home

Breakfast is laid out slowly under the arches. In the evening, the kitchen sends out a handful of plates built around what the island grew and the sea gave up that week. No long menu, no ceremony, just careful cooking and a good bottle from a Maltese hillside.

Chef Andrea Farrugia keeps it simple on purpose, and the courtyard is the finest room in the house to eat in.

Beyond the door

Mdina, Rabat and the bastions

You are already somewhere remarkable. Everything below is a short walk, and we are happy to arrange the rest.

The Silent City

Step out into the oldest streets in Malta, walled and car-free, best seen at dusk once the day visitors have gone.

The bastion walk

Follow the ramparts for a view that runs from Mosta's dome to the sea. Our favourite bench is five minutes from the gate.

Rabat, just outside

Cross the bridge for catacombs, a Sunday market and the honest cafes where the locals actually eat.

We came for one night and stayed for three. It is less a hotel than a friend's beautiful old house that happens to make an extraordinary breakfast.
