When to build custom and when not to.
An honest answer Maltese SMEs rarely get from agencies.
- Build custom if your business does something specific (a restaurant with a unique menu format, a Maltese family business with an unusual workflow, a product that does not fit any template), if you plan to be online for many years, or if you want to rank on Google for searches that matter in Malta.
- Use a hosted platform if you are testing an idea, if you only need to sell three SKUs, or if the entire job of the site is one big button that says "Book". We will tell you when this is the answer and we will not be upset about it.
- Do not use a free template builder for anything you actually care about. The hidden cost in monthly fees, the way the search rankings collapse when you change template, the lock-in. It will cost you more than the website did inside two years.

Do you build on WordPress or a template builder?
No. The sites we build are custom-coded HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, served from a small Maltese server we control. The pages are fast, accessible, SEO-ready out of the box, and there is no monthly platform fee. For e-commerce specifically, we sometimes build on a hosted storefront platform where it is the right fit, and only when it is.
Will my website rank on Google?
The technical foundation we ship every site with (semantic HTML, fast loading, structured data, sitemap, mobile-first, local schema for Malta) gives you the strongest possible starting point. Ranking itself depends on the content you publish over time and the local-SEO work you do alongside (Google Business Profile, citations, reviews). We are happy to advise on both.
Can you also write the content?
Yes. We write or rewrite copy in a plain, opinionated voice that matches the brand. Most clients are surprised at how much faster the project moves when the writing and the design are done by the same person.
What about the brand and the software side?
Yes. The whole studio is built around delivering brand identity, websites, and custom software from the same person. The Thorim project was a single one-month sprint that covered all three. It is usually cheaper and faster to do them together than to find a brand designer, a developer, and a software engineer separately.
